Canada offers various visa options that allow parents to stay with their children to support their studies. When a parent accompanies a child attending elementary, middle, or high school,
it greatly helps with a stable academic environment and adaptation to daily life.
- Child’s Study Permit + Parent’s Accompanying Visa
The most common form. Parents are not permitted to work or study legally.
- Parent’s Study Permit + Child’s Free Public Schooling
If a parent enrolls in a regular degree program (College/University), the child can receive free public education like local students.
- Parent’s Study Permit + Child in Private School
Private schools follow individual school policies rather than district rules. Some may accept children at local tuition when a parent holds a study permit, but it varies by school.
- Parent Work Permit + Child’s Free Public Schooling
If a parent has an LMIA-based work permit or an open work permit, the child can receive free public education.
- Parent Work Permit + Child in Private School
In this case as well, some private schools may apply local tuition rates for the child.
- Parent Language-Study Visa + Child Pays International Tuition
If the parent is only enrolled in an ESL institute, the child must pay international student tuition.
- Parent Graduate Studies + Child’s Free Education
If one parent enrolls in a graduate program, the other spouse can obtain an open work permit and the child can receive free public education.
- Parent in PR Application Process + Child’s Tuition
While awaiting PR with a work permit, the child can receive the benefits of free public education.
